Lord Harry Smith met his wife during the Peninsular wars and brought this lovely Spanish Lady to South Africa along with her favourite breakfast treat: the cantaloupe melon which she insisted be grown wherever her husband was posted. The Dutch Farmers thought this a very odd habit for “ontbijt” and jokingly named the fruit “Spanish Bacon”. South Africa is the only country that calls this melon “Spanspek” to this very day.
