Among the many who plied their trade and wares around the ferry point at Norval’s Pont was a canny pedlar, known to all and sundry as “Sammy the Smouse”. Few, if any, of the rugged waggoneers gave him a second thought as they passed on their arduous journeys to North and South across the Orange and fewer still, if any, could have imagined that within a few short years, the humble pedlar would become South Africa’s richest industrialist and advisor to the President of the ZAR, Paul Kruger. Today there can still be found statues and buildings erected in his honour and we remember him now as Sammy Marx.
