Know your limitations and DONT OVERREACH YOURSELF. At 1250 -1500 metres altitude the air is thinner than at sea level and you may need to acclimatise before exerting yourself. The Orange River and Gariep Dam waters are entirely safe to drink providing you take care to choose where you drink from sensibly.

DONT PUT A FOOT DOWN BETWEEN RIVER BOULDERS. Stepping stones can be fun but never put a foot into a crevice that you can’t clearly see into. The water may be shallow but foot entrapment is a real danger.

DO WEAR FOOTWEAR YOU CAN SLIP OUT OF EASILY RATHER THAN THINGS WITH LOTS OF LACES. If you do get a foot stuck, losing a shoe is better than being stuck in waters that can rise rapidly when the river is flowing strongly, especially below the Dam Wall when the sluices are opened in the hydro power section.
